Frequently Asked Questions

  • I work with clients who are physically located in Ohio, including in Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and every other place in between. I primarily work with adults and couples who need support through grief (death of a loved one, lack of a desired married vocation, etc.), infertility, or miscarriage. However, I do also work with adult individuals interested in a Catholic counselor who can be sensitive to the intersection of faith and psychology with issues such as feeling anxious, depressed, or uncertain about God’s will. I do not offer marital or couples counseling not related to grief, infertility, or miscarriage. Ultimately, I will discern with you whether I am a good fit for your needs and will offer referrals if I believe you will be best helped by another professional.

I offer clinical mental health services with infused spirituality. I do not offer spiritual direction or pastoral counseling.

  • As a counselor of Spirit of Peace Clinical Counseling, I see clients in private meeting spaces at three local Catholic Churches in the greater Columbus area for in-person sessions: St. Paul the Apostle Church, Westerville, St. Mary Church, German Village, and St. Catharine Church, Bexley. I rotate between these locations throughout the week and also offer online telehealth sessions for clients located anywhere within the State of Ohio. My mailing address on Old Henderson Road is not available for sessions.

Westerville Office: 369 N. State St. Westerville, OH 43082. The office is located on St. Paul the Apostle Church's campus in the Parish Office building, which looks like a house between State Street and St. Paul School. Park in the lot immediately next to the Parish Office building and enter using the entrance on the State St. side of the building opposite the main entrance. For more information and a picture of the office building, please see the link here: https://spiritofpeaceclinicalcounseling.com/westerville/

German Village Office: 684 S. 3rd St Columbus, OH 43206. The office is located on St. Mary Church's campus in the Old Rectory building, which is between the church and main school building. If limited space is available, you may park in the lot behind the church which you can access via the driveway immediately next to the church. In lieu of parking in the lot, you may also use 2-hour parking available on 3rd Street across from and down the street from the church or elsewhere on the block. Go to the back door of the office building.

Bexley Office: 500 S. Gould Rd. Columbus, OH 43209. The office is located on St. Catharine Church’s campus in the Parish Office building, which looks like a house and is next to the church. Park in the parking lot behind the church and you will see the office building to the left of the church. Go to the upper level of the building to the door marked "Parish Office". • Online video (telehealth) sessions are possible for clients located anywhere in the State of Ohio, including Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, and every other place in between. In order to do online sessions, you will need to complete a telehealth consent form. You will also need to be in a private and quiet space with a good internet connection. Phone calls are possible when video is not although video is preferred.

Video sessions occur inside Spirit of Peace’s online Therapy Portal also used for paperwork and scheduling; you will be invited to set up an account when we have scheduled our first appointment. You will find a link to the portal in your automated email appointment reminders, but here is the link if needed: https://www.therapyportal.com/p/sopcc/

  • Although I am happy to investigate if your state/territory allows out-of-state providers to offer telehealth services to residents in your area, many states require licensure in order to do that and I am only licensed by Ohio. If I am unable to work with you personally, I am happy to assist you with referrals to counselors in your area.

  • My regular office hours for seeing clients are Monday through Friday, beginning with 8am sessions and ending with 3pm sessions. I do not have evening or weekend availability. Session availability will depend on my existing recurring appointments with other clients, as well as your location preference.

  • My out-of-pocket rate is $175 for the first 55 minute session and $150 for subsequent 55 minute therapy sessions.

If using in-network insurance, the exact amount you will pay will depend. Some insurance plans have an amount (deductible or out of pocket maximum) you must pay before insurance payments kick in. Other plans have set amounts per session (copay or coinsurance). It is best to call the number on the back of your insurance card and speak to an insurance representative about your specific counseling benefits and your payment responsibility. I am happy to discuss this process further with you if you need assistance.

If using out-of-network insurance benefits, you will pay my full out-of-pocket rate and then receive any potential reimbursement from the insurance company.

My missed appointment fee is $50 and my late arrival fee is $30. Please see the question on attendance policies for more information.

  • Yes, depending on which insurance plan you have. I offer in-network insurance billing to Aetna, Medical Mutual, Ohio PPO Connect, OSU Prime Care, and United Healthcare/Optum. As we get set up to begin counseling, I will provide further information on how to confirm your in-network coverage.

If I am not in-network with your insurance, I can provide you with necessary paperwork (superbill) to submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement for sessions after you pay my out-of-pocket rate. Not all insurance plans offer this benefit.

  • I ask for 24-hour notice via email or phone when you need to cancel an appointment. Any cancellation within 24 hours may be subject to a $50 missed appointment fee, including but not limited to absences due to childcare, illness, or weather at my discretion. Any arrivals later than 7 minutes late may be subject to a $30 late arrival fee. Consider completing a telehealth consent form in advance for easy transition to an online session to avoid these attendance-related fees!

These two fees are not billable insurance and therefore must be billed to your payment card. You may also still have a copay or co-insurance payment in addition to the late arrival fee for affected sessions.

Clients receive one free pass from either the missed appointment fee or the late arrival fee.

  • The first session together will start with a casual conversation of getting to know each other. I will ask a variety of questions about you and welcome any questions you have about me or my clinical work! We will also make sure your paperwork is complete, discuss what brings you to counseling, explore your goals for counseling, and review some practicals such as your right to privacy and attendance policies.

It will likely go into later sessions, but I also like to thoroughly review your clinical history report (medical history, family history, etc.).

  • Therapy sessions with me are relaxed and conversational. No need for formality here- you can be yourself and I will be my authentic therapist self as we work together. Some sessions are heavy, but there are other times when you need a laugh and we joke about dumb the Ohio weather is again this year. My therapy sessions are collaborative and I welcome your feedback and questions. I show genuine care and respect for you in session to help you feel comfortable as we work together to achieve your goal of experiencing relief.

I like to start sessions with updates since your last session. Then we spend much of session talking about what is on your mind: your experiences with your main concern, other stressors or joys, or how you are doing. We may do some problem solving, exploring various ideas and coping tools, and may even try an exercise in session. Finally, we will wrap up our conversation by confirming our next appointment and, if faith is important to you, closing with a personalized prayer just for you.

Sessions are each approximately 55 minutes long.

  • Therapy may be a good fit for you if you are ready to not suffer alone anymore and want someone to validate your pain and walk on your journey with you. You may be afraid of the future and uncomfortable with your feelings, but you’re ready to talk about them and face the discomfort in order to get the help and relief you deserve. You are willing to self-reflect and have an open mind to what you may learn in session about yourself, your experience, and coping with your struggle. And you’re ready to do what it takes in session and in your daily life to restore peace and fulfillment in your life.

  • How long you need to be in therapy depends on your particular journey and individual needs. Most clients need counseling every 1-2 weeks until they begin to experience relief and shift to maintaining their progress; this could be after several months or after a year or more. Ultimately, I want a timeline that works best for you and I will tailor the counseling process to fit your unique needs.

  • Contact me to schedule a free consultation! During that conversation, I will ask you to briefly describe what brings you to counseling. After I confirm that I believe that I am a good fit for your needs, I will answer any questions or concerns that you may have about starting therapy with me, to make sure you are confident I am right for you! I will then ask for some additional basic information about you, confirm some logistical details, and confirm my current availability for scheduling. Finally, if we are both ready to start the process, we will schedule your first appointment and I will send you the necessary paperwork from my group counseling practice Spirit of Peace Clinical Counseling to complete before that appointment.
